Salvos Stores x Green Friday

10/11/2022

This year, Salvos Stores is proud to be participating in ‘Green Friday’ - an online retail event that promotes making more sustainable shopping choices over the Black Friday period. Green Friday will run from the 18th to the 21st of November, the weekend before Black Friday, offering shoppers discounts from sustainable brands and the opportunity to think consciously about what they buy during sale time and where they buy it from.

In 2021, Australians spent approximately $8 billion over the 4-day weekend from Black Friday to Cyber Monday (the Monday after Black Friday when many online retailers offer sales). This year we are expected to spend even more.

It’s understandable that Australians want to take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, especially with the cost of living on the rise. However, the problem with shopping during this sale period is how easy it can be to get caught up in the Black Friday frenzy without stopping to think about where our money is going or the larger impact of the purchases we are making.

Clothing and accessories are the most popular categories for Black Friday spending amongst Australians, with 42% of us planning to shop the sales for new additions to our wardrobes. However, the fashion and textiles industry is also one of the largest contributors to over-production and waste. Of the 100 billion garments that are produced annually, 33% will go to landfill within the first year of purchase. This means that one third of the clothing items we buy this Black Friday will likely find themselves in landfill by the time next year’s sales roll around.

Whilst Black Friday sales may save us money in the short-term, the cycle of overproduction, overconsumption, and wastage that they feed into has major long-term costs to the planet. So what is the solution? Do we simply have to choose between feeling guilty about the environmental impact of our purchases and boycotting the sales completely?

This is where Green Friday comes in.

At Salvos we believe in combining purchasing power with sustainability, circular-economy thinking, and social good. That’s why we are partnering with Green Friday to encourage our customers to limit the environmental costs of their purchases this Black Friday period by making considered shopping choices and supporting sustainable, ethical retailers. From Friday the 18th to Monday the 21st of November, Salvos Stores will be among the many such retailers offering exclusive ‘Green Friday’ discounts and offers.

As it takes place before Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Green Friday will give you the chance to browse second-hand and sustainably made options for your gifts and bargains before seeking them out at mainstream retailers. This way, you can shop more mindfully without sacrificing the joy of a great deal.
