Those who have visited Monet's home in Giverny will remember the many Japanese woodblock prints that hang on his walls. (Those currently there are reproductions.) Monet was painting at the height of Japanese influence on Western art, and particularly on the Impressionists, who saw in its conventions a way to liberate their paintings from traditional Western formulas. This 2001 catalogue, which is rather hard to find, comes from a fairly comprehensive Australian exhibition that both displayed woodblock prints juxtaposed with Monet's paintings, and, in an excellent introduction, discussed in detail Monet's reaction to these prints.
