Rope (or corded as Americans call them) petticoats are very full and use rope sewn into casings, to produce a stiffness. Rope petticoats are incredibly robust – ladies boiled them up and starched them so they stuck right out.
This hand-sewn petticoat is presumed to be a great survivor from that era. One row of encased rope gives weight to its hem, which causes the skirt to hang in a flared fashion & swing out when dancing.
In fantastic condition. Cotton is still thick & white.
